Crypto wallets compared

A wallet doesn't store coins. It stores the keys that control them. This page covers the main hardware, mobile, browser, desktop and multisig wallets, what each one does well, and where each one falls short. All wallets listed here are self-custody (non-custodial) unless noted.

Hot wallets vs. cold wallets

Hot wallet (software)Cold wallet (hardware / air-gapped)
Where keys liveOn an internet-connected phone or computerOn a separate device that never exposes them
CostFreeDevice purchase
ConvenienceVery high: instant dApp accessNeeds the device to confirm every transaction
Protection against malwareLimitedStrong: transactions are verified on the device screen
Best forSmall balances, daily use, DeFi experimentsSavings, larger amounts, long-term holding

Many people use both. A hardware wallet holds savings, and a hot wallet holds a small "spending" balance. Many hot wallets, including MetaMask and Rabby, can also connect to a hardware wallet for signing.

How to choose a wallet

  1. Start with your chains. A Solana user, a Bitcoin saver and a DeFi user on Arbitrum need different wallets. Check the "Chains" line on each card above.
  2. Match the security level to the amount. A mobile wallet is fine for pocket money. For savings, use a hardware wallet or a multisig.
  3. Check the reputation and history. Look at how long the wallet has existed, whether it is open source, and whether it has had security incidents and how they were handled.
  4. Download only from official sources. Fake wallet apps in app stores and search ads are one of the biggest causes of theft.
  5. Test your backup. Restore the wallet from your recovery phrase on a spare device before you deposit a large amount.

Setting up a new wallet safely

  • Buy hardware wallets only from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Never use a device that arrives with a pre-filled recovery phrase.
  • Write the recovery phrase on paper or metal, in the exact order, and store it somewhere safe from fire and water.
  • Consider a passphrase (a "25th word") for extra protection, but only if you can reliably back it up too.
  • Never type your recovery phrase into a website, a form or a chat. Legitimate wallets only ask for it when you restore a wallet inside their own app.
